The workers in the South Asian nation are demanding a minimum monthly wage of 30,000 taka ($245), more than double the current 12,500 taka, saying rising costs of food, housing, transport and healthcare have sharply eroded their purchasing power. Queen guitarist Sir Brian May has recalled a nerve-racking experience from 2011 when he questioned humanity’s ambitions to explore space in front of some of the most celebrated astronauts in history, including the first man to walk on the moon, Neil Armstrong. During his speech, May challenged the idea of sending humans beyond Earth while the planet itself continues to face serious environmental and humanitarian problems. He questioned whether humanity was ready to expand into space after causing so much damage to its own home. The legendary musician admitted that he was terrified of delivering those remarks in front of six Apollo moonwalkers, including Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Charlie Duke and Harrison Schmitt. May feared his comments might offend the astronauts who had dedicated their…

- Seifert blasts 93 as New Zealand win fifth India T20
HAMILTON: Tim Seifert narrowly missed a maiden international century but did enough to steer New Zealand to a seven-wicket win over India in the fifth and final T20 on Sunday. Opener Seifert found some form with the bat, blasting 93 off 50 balls as the home side eased to 195-3 off 18 overs, after Adam Milne had earlier taken 4-19 to restrict the target to 192. The result wasn’t enough for New Zealand to salvage the series, which the tourists won 3-2 after winning the first three games. New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner lamented his team’s failure to win either of the first two matches, which were both tight contests in Christchurch, before finding form late in the series. “I think those small moments in the first couple of games let us down,” said Santner, referring primarily to…

But US President Donald Trump reiterated his threats on Saturday, saying the United States…

Diplomatic efforts to end the Middle East war have been punctuated by repeated threats from the United States and Israel to resume bombardments as they hold crucial elections. “A potential future war could last longer than previous conflict, and the American president would not be in a position to dictate the timing or the conditions of its conclusion,” said army spokesman Mohammad Akraminia, according to Iranian state television. - Pakistan’s past and future make a bid for the present
Whatever there is to be said about Fakhar Zaman has been said. And he has usually said it himself – first when he made his debut and steered Pakistan to their greatest triumph of the past decade, then countless times for Lahore Qalandars, then on that one rainy day in Bangalore, climbing a mountain no one had given him a shot at. Fakhar has had a long few years, with recurring injuries and patches of very lean form, but his penchant of showing up when it matters, in extremely emphatic fashion, hasn’t wavered with time. In a side that gets frequently noted for crumbling under pressure, faltering in the biggest moments, never being quite able to get over the line for true glory, Fakhar has churned out a reputation for himself that is the opposite. A ‘big match player’ is the sort of cliche…

- Cyber safety
WHILE the state’s proposal to create a Cybersecurity and Social Media Awareness Council envisages needed interventions to protect children from online harm, the same body’s focus on ‘fake news’ — as described by the government — is cause for concern. Speaking at a recent seminar in Islamabad, the federal information minister said there is a need to raise awareness about the “dangers of fake news”, while also emphasising the need for digital education in schools and colleges. In particular, he said children should be protected from cyberattacks. At the same event, the IT minister observed that it was important for both parents and children to know who the latter were interacting with online. There can be little argument with the fact that cyberspace can be a dangerous place for children.…
